Among many beverages are enjoyed in Hanoi, there is still a type of coffee that you have chance to come to Hanoi, you should try once to remember it forever. Vietnamese egg coffee or Cà Phê Trứng is anything but a clearer coffee with a mild taste which is considered as a Vietnamese traditional cappuchino.

In other countries, coffee mixed with milk, chocolate, a bit wine, cream, etc. makes beverages of the world more various. In Hanoi, the first cup of egg coffee was made in early 20th century by Nguyen Van Giang. He used to be a bartender at the 5-star Sofitel Legend Metropole hotel under French domination.


An egg coffee is traditionally prepared with egg yolks, sugar, condensed milk and Robusta coffee. The drink is made by beating egg yolks with sugar and coffee, then extracting the coffee into the half of the cup, followed by a similar amount of egg cream, which is prepared by heating and beating the yolks.


A cup of coffee is usually small, short and it is placed in a bowl of hot water to retain its temperature. Mr. Giang used egg yolks to replace milk. But it is mixed more and more deliciously by the whole materials as eggs, milk, coffee that you will find so amazing and unforgettable. Try to taste this type of coffee, you will find the fat flavor of egg, both fragrant and bold coffee flavor.

Although the egg coffee has appeared for a long time, it is still a hot trend of cuisine in Hanoi and even in Vietnam. It also becomes a beautiful cultural feature of Hanoi.



The recipe for egg coffee is spread everywhere, even in Saigon. However, the number of coffee shops making egg coffee successfully is small nowadays. If you have chance to come to Hanoi, we highly recommend to visit the Giang Café – home of egg coffee. It is humbly hidden on a small lane at 39, Nguyen Huu Huan Street in the city’s old quarter. It may be difficult to find for visitors, but it is well worth the effort. The most important factor which makes Giang Café more unique and  different from another shops, is the formula to fix exactly the amount of eggs and coffee, but no have or just a little of egg sickliness.

It can be used as a satisfying snack on a cold day. You can add ice to it, but it’s more delicious when it’s still hot. Once you try this unique drink, you would really love it and back to try again.
